Silvia Venturini Fendi: A Bag and Its Makers
A Bag and Its Makers
ÉPOPLI ·

A small shape close to the body
Introduced in 1997, the Baguette bag sits close to the body. Its elongated shape and short strap connect its name to the gesture of carrying bread beneath an arm. Silvia Venturini Fendi history can begin with this small object because a recognizable outline becomes the basis for changes in surface and material. Continuity makes those changes easier to see.
An empty bag behaves differently from one containing possessions, just as carrying it on a shoulder differs from holding it by hand. A frontal logo is therefore only part of its design. Strap length and fastening position organize gestures; thickness affects how the shape survives use. In this reading, leather craft is knowledge of form and movement as well as attractive finishing.
Finding a role in a family workshop
Raised in Rome, she knew the business led by her mother Anna and her aunts. As a granddaughter of founders Adele and Edoardo, she inherited proximity to the workshop, but Silvia Venturini Fendi history cannot be reduced to lineage. Early work included the younger Fendissime line before her responsibilities developed across accessories and menswear. Published profiles disagree between 1960 and 1961 for her birth year, so no exact year is asserted here.
LVMH dates her work alongside Karl Lagerfeld in artistic direction from 1992 and her responsibility for accessories and menswear from 1994. Family presence and professional authority are distinct. Familiarity with a workshop does not by itself settle the recurring tasks of selection and production. Following the areas she managed and the colleagues with whom she shared decisions gives a more precise account than inheritance alone.
A stable form, different surfaces
The Baguette bag invites attention to a recurring structure before the variety of its motifs. In Silvia Venturini Fendi history, decoration can compete with that structure or make it more apparent. A substantial material defines an edge differently from a supple one, while a dense embellished surface may resemble an image even though strap and fastening remain necessary for use.
The Hand in Hand project, launched in 2020, extended this relationship through partnerships with artisans across Italy. Regional techniques reinterpreted the basic form, making the workshop’s knowledge part of the result. A new version may involve more than a different colour: construction and handwork can change as well. Two bags appearing similar in a photograph need not be made through identical processes. Looking at the inside and side panels helps reveal differences concealed by a famous product name.
An interior that changes the exterior
The Peekaboo, introduced in 2008 for Spring 2009, reorganized the relationship between inside and outside. Fendi Japan’s retrospective explicitly distinguishes the presentation year and season. Within Silvia Venturini Fendi history, a composed top-handle form gains another identity when its front opens to reveal the interior.
A lining is usually associated with the user’s private view. Here the degree of opening changes the public outline. Inside and outside are consequently not fixed equivalents of front and back: carrying and fastening determine what becomes visible. This question of leather craft concerns the balance of closure and suppleness more than the quantity of ornament. Comparisons limited to closed bags miss the gesture that the design makes possible.
Menswear and the scale of a centenary
Accessories alone do not account for a long menswear practice. Silvia Venturini Fendi history also concerns proportion and touch at the scale of clothing. In an interview she recalled volunteering for menswear when Lagerfeld did not want that responsibility. The recollection makes the division of work more tangible than treating all Fendi clothes as one person’s production.
The Fall 2025 centenary combined women’s and men’s silhouettes. An official look record pairs a cropped inlaid fur jacket with a Macro Dots jacquard dress. Inlay assembles pieces; jacquard creates a pattern through weaving. Similar visual effects can therefore involve different making processes. Examining that distinction allows a commemorative collection to be read through the redeployment of material knowledge rather than as an illustrated timeline.
Continuing the experiment inside
The Spring 2026 Peekaboo used embellished interiors, including floral beading, in the Inner Beauty series. Presented in September 2025 and discussed the following year, it shows a persistent question within Silvia Venturini Fendi history: an established relationship between interior and exterior can remain productive. The collection season and actual presentation date are different kinds of information.
An ornament on a large outer panel is legible at a distance; an interior detail requires proximity or opening. The distinction concerns the moment of revelation rather than simply the intensity of decoration. The user controls part of that encounter. This offers an alternative to judging every collection by the invention of a new silhouette. Deciding what an existing structure can continue to do is also design work.
An honorary role and a body of work
Since 1 October 2025 her position has been Honorary President, supporting heritage, craftsmanship and Fendi Casa according to LVMH. Silvia Venturini Fendi history should not continue to label her the house’s current creative chief. Her own acknowledgment of Lagerfeld, Kim Jones and the team also emphasizes that responsibilities changed across periods. Later collections require their own credits.
The lasting question is how much practical knowledge a small object can contain. A durable basic shape does not mean an absence of change. Strap, closure, surface, interior and support must be reconciled repeatedly. Clothing can be examined in the same way. Moving between a visible motif and the process making it possible brings the workshop and organization into view alongside the celebrated name.
