From Bilbao to Barcelona

Jon Kortajarena was born in Bilbao in 1985. He grew up close to his family and his mother’s hairdressing business, and later recalled an early interest in acting. A visit to a Barcelona fashion event with a friend in 2003 led to discovery. Work for Roberto Verino in Madrid supplied early runway experience before international bookings followed.[1][2]

An international debut

Around 2004, Just Cavalli advertising and international collections raised his profile. His early work included Emporio Armani, John Galliano and a Versace project photographed by Steven Meisel. Early attention did not guarantee steady employment: he later described returning to Barcelona when bookings declined. That interruption complicates an otherwise straightforward discovery-to-success story.[1][2]

The campaign that opened another door

Guess advertising became a bridge to a long collaboration with Tom Ford, who noticed the images. Kortajarena’s pronounced brows, facial structure and direct gaze fitted the designer’s sharply tailored imagery. Across seasons, a recurring model carries both changing clothes and a recognizable brand character. His campaigns offer a useful example of that visual continuity.[2][3]

Film and television

His appearance in Tom Ford’s 2009 film A Single Man brought him to cinema audiences. Further acting work included Spanish-language productions, Netflix’s High Seas and crime drama El Inmortal. Unlike a single photographic frame, a dramatic role demands continuity across scenes. Building that separate craft became an important part of his career beyond modeling.[1][3][4]

Using a public platform

Kortajarena visited Nepal through Bulgari and Save the Children and worked with Greenpeace around climate impacts in Vanuatu. These are documented examples of using a fashion platform to draw attention to wider issues. Participation should not be equated with resolving those problems; it records the scope of his public engagement alongside commercial work.[2]

Reconsidering a familiar public image

In a 2025 interview he discussed how an established modeling image could complicate recognition as an actor. A familiar face opens doors but also brings expectations. His continued fashion work alongside screen roles represents parallel careers rather than a complete departure from modeling. Assessing campaigns and acting credits separately makes that development easier to understand.[3][4]

Published work in 2026

Models.com records 2026 work for Esquire Turkey, AnOther Man China and Zara in May, followed by White Paper covers and editorial photographed by Javier Biosca in September. These credits extend the record beyond his best-known early campaigns or film debut. Runway work, sustained brand relationships, screen roles and contemporary editorials form connected but distinct chapters.[5]
