Loewe Puzzle history: leather and changing form

Loewe Puzzle history follows Jonathan Anderson’s 2015 design into its tenth anniversary, exploring leather panels, colour, artist references and archive reissues.

Flat leather becomes a folding volume

Loewe Puzzle history begins with Jonathan Anderson’s 2015 design, following his arrival at the house in 2013. The visible divisions are both pattern and construction. Rather than disappearing into a seamless-looking shell, leather panels announce their boundaries. Following those lines makes the conversion of flat material into volume legible. The name directs attention towards relationships between pieces before it directs attention towards a familiar category of bag.

Between two collections in 2015

The tenth-anniversary dossier places the first appearance in the Spring Summer 2015 men’s collection, followed by the women’s Fall Winter show. An early handleless version developed towards the more familiar configuration. The record therefore contains change from the beginning. It links Jonathan Anderson’s creative direction with an established material practice: cutting and assembling leather became a conspicuous part of how the object communicated its design.

Panel geometry also determines how colour behaves. Contrasting colours emphasize separate pieces; a single colour makes seams and shadows more prominent. This differs from placing a picture on a completed surface because colour boundaries can coincide with construction. Following leather panels around the sides makes the bag read as a continuous spatial composition, rather than as a graphic conceived only for its frontal photograph.

A framework for art and craft

The form subsequently became a framework for artistic references and different techniques. LVMH’s retrospective names William Morris, Joe Brainard, pixel art and animation among its sources. Appliqué adds material to a surface; embroidery builds it with thread; leather marquetry fits shaped pieces into a composition. These processes give a recurring outline different kinds of edges, thickness and reflection. Panel geometry remains a point of orientation within those variations.

Nineteen returns and one new design in 2025

Puzzle 10 in 2025 paired nineteen re-editions with one new design. Instead of marking the anniversary only with a date, it set different objects beside one another. The collection made the range of earlier surfaces visible within a common form. It was also an act of selection: an archive was edited into a new group of objects, each made again from the perspective of the anniversary.

The new confetti design recalled Lara Favaretto’s installation for the 2023 women’s show. A dispersed field of small colours moved into the scale of a handheld object. This juxtaposed two kinds of fragmentation: the structural divisions of the bag and the visual scatter of confetti. The interesting transformation lies in that change of scale and medium, rather than simply in attaching an artist’s name to a product.

When a line is structure and image

The Puzzle’s lines do not choose between function and image. They describe assembly while also directing attention across colour and shadow. Loewe Puzzle history follows that geometric framework as it receives different craft processes and cultural references. Even when the surface changes, the basic act of reading the object remains spatial: turning it reveals relationships that a single image cannot contain, connecting construction to the wider sequence of its transformations.
