Loewe Amazona history: leather and changing form

Loewe Amazona history follows the 1975 bag through its 2021 redesign and Amazona 180, exploring changing proportions, leather construction and everyday movement.

A 1975 object and a 2026 name

Loewe Amazona history begins in 1975. The Amazona 180 belongs to a later reinterpretation marking the house’s 2026 anniversary, not to a bag invented 180 years earlier. Separating those dates reveals the dialogue between an inherited product and contemporary designers. Material character, carrying arrangements and changing proportions all contribute to that history; the persistence of a name is only one part of the record.

A leather bag for work and movement

The original is discussed in relation to women’s changing working lives and mobility. Its top handles placed a horizontal container beneath the hand, making the bag part of a day’s activities rather than solely an ornament. That context does not mean one design caused social change. It offers a more concrete question: what kind of movement, belongings and daily rhythm could this leather bag accommodate?

The position of the top handles establishes a rhythm within the outline. They rise while the body extends sideways, balancing two directions. Corners and openings show the meeting between supple material and a defined container. This leather bag is more informative when read through those relationships than through its emblem alone. Changing the body’s width or height can alter the entire composition without abandoning the name.

Two proportions in the 2021 return

Jonathan Anderson’s 2021 reinterpretation introduced the Amazona 19 Square and Amazona 28. One emphasized a squarer format, the other a horizontal rectangle. Contemporary coverage described compartments for electronic devices and removable straps. The relationship between historical outline and present-day contents became explicit: a working day in the 2020s did not require exactly the same objects as one in the 1970s. Revision could therefore happen inside as well as outside.

Amazona 180 and a softer reading

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez presented the Amazona 180 within their Spring Summer 2026 debut collection. The official anniversary account emphasizes softness and ease as a new reading of the original spirit. In this context, inheritance does not require every line to remain fixed. Changing how leather settles and how the object is held can establish another relationship with the earlier design while leaving its lineage recognizable.

The new version was presented with an extended horizontal proportion and a relaxed appearance when carried from one handle. An open mouth lets the shell look responsive rather than box-like. These visible changes bring forward another aspect of the family: organized containment meets a more fluid image of carrying. The Amazona 180 records that encounter as the work of a new creative partnership, rather than as an anonymous update.

Keeping a name, rereading daily life

The Amazona brings a long corporate history into contact with a more specific product chronology. Its 1975 origin, 2021 revisions and 2026 reinterpretation are distinct moments. Read together, they show a bag being reconsidered through changing daily life and creative leadership. Loewe Amazona history is therefore not simply the survival of an outline. It is a sequence of decisions about how an inherited object can continue to move with its users.
