Early life

Freja Beha Erichsen was born in Roskilde, Denmark, in 1987 and grew up outside Copenhagen. Forest walks and cycling preceded a career associated with an independent image, though childhood should not be treated as a formula for success. British Vogue also described her interest in music and playing instruments. Nature and music remained recurring reference points in accounts of her upbringing.[1][2]

Entering the profession

Freja Beha Erichsen entered modeling after being scouted in Denmark. Accounts disagree about her age at discovery, so no precise age is asserted here. Her agency recalls an unsuccessful first casting trip to Milan, followed by interest from Prada and Miu Miu the next season. Her beginning therefore involved unsuccessful auditions as well as opportunity; 2005 is the documented turning point in international collections.[1][2][4]

The breakthrough

Freja Beha Erichsen opened Miu Miu in 2005 and appeared for Prada and Louis Vuitton. An unforced manner and androgynous style offered designers a different reading of femininity. Early Vogue commentary emphasized the coexistence of boyish toughness and softness. That observation helps explain her interpretive range rather than merely assigning a label to her appearance.[1][4]

Defining work

For Freja Beha Erichsen, collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld became an important continuing relationship. DNA highlights four consecutive Chanel campaigns and work for his namesake label. Campaigns for Jil Sander, Gucci and Chloé also placed her in contrasting visual worlds. Chanel was a central relationship within a broader practice that moved between restrained imagery and elaborate clothing.[1][2]

Expanding the practice

Freja Beha Erichsen built her career when runway appearances and print editorials strongly reinforced one another. Work for editions of Vogue, i-D and Numéro accompanied the collections. Her collaborators included Juergen Teller, Collier Schorr and Peter Lindbergh. An androgynous style remained recognizable without limiting the photographs to one expression; each collaboration gave the clothing a different atmosphere.[2][4]

Latest documented work

For Freja Beha Erichsen, recent history must distinguish public credits from speculation. The Models.com list reviewed here records Saint Laurent summer and winter campaigns in 2023, preceded by Loewe advertising and Saint Laurent shows in 2022. The absence of a later credit is not proof of retirement. A Danish encyclopedia entry published in September 2026 summarizes her career without announcing a new project.[3][4]

A place in fashion history

Freja Beha Erichsen’s place in fashion is clearest in sustained work: major debut-season shows, international Vogue covers and recurring designer collaborations. Denmark recognized her with two Model of the Year awards. Androgyny here describes a visible photographic and sartorial aesthetic, not an inference about private life. Her archive provides a useful point of comparison for later approaches to the model image.[1][3][4]
