Modeling begins in Sydney
Elle Macpherson was born Eleanor Gow in Sydney in 1964. An appearance in a 1982 television advertisement for TAB Cola, at eighteen, provided early public visibility. Australia’s National Portrait Gallery identifies the advertisement as an important point in her development into an international model. Her beginnings involved moving images as well as photographs. Australian identity continued to inform her public image and ceremonial appearances as her career expanded overseas.[1][2]

Recognition built through repeated covers
Macpherson debuted in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit in 1985. She covered the issue consecutively from 1986 through 1988 and again in 1994 and 2006. These five covers, including group appearances, document a long relationship with the publication. The work reached audiences beyond specialist fashion readers. Recognition emerged not merely from physical appearance but also from locations, photographic composition, distribution and repeated exposure through the magazine.[3][4]

A nickname and an international career
Macpherson became widely known as “The Body,” but her work extended beyond one publication’s swimsuit imagery into designer runways, campaigns and magazine covers. The nickname became an easily remembered brand and later appeared in product names. It did not, however, explain all her professional abilities. Sustaining photographic work and meeting different clients’ requirements provided the experience that made commercial use of that image possible.[1][5]

Acting and television production
Macpherson appeared in films including Sirens and Batman & Robin and in the sitcom Friends. She later took hosting and production roles on Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model and Fashion Star. These activities used on-camera presence while requiring dialogue, continuity and presenting skills different from still photography. Her appearance in the Sydney Olympics closing ceremony in 2000 connected modeling with Australian popular-cultural representation. Together these credits demonstrate a career beyond fashion imagery.[1][5]
Making a name into a business
Around 1989 Macpherson began a lingerie licensing business under her own name. Elle Macpherson Intimates moved beyond payment for appearing in advertisements toward continuing involvement in a product brand. Her business activities expanded across lingerie, body care and sun care, connecting her name with several product categories. In her business recollections, modeling developed into a career, then a brand and licensing arrangements. The process represents changes in contractual participation, not proof that celebrity automatically guarantees commercial success.[6]

Becoming a co-founder
Macpherson co-founded WelleCo in 2014. She described involvement as a shareholder and creative director as different from earlier licensing arrangements. The company documents the growing importance of management and brand direction in her later career. This account concerns establishment and roles, not claims about products’ health effects. An interview shared by the brand reflects on her move from modeling into business ahead of its tenth anniversary in 2024. Recognition acquired through modeling was becoming an asset she helped manage within a company.[6][7]

A memoir and the interpretation of a long career
Macpherson published the memoir Elle in 2024; the publisher records its Australian release on September 3. It is a dated example of later professional activity. A memoir presents its author’s perspective, which should be distinguished from independent verification of every interpretation. A continuing feature of her career is the connection between modeling imagery, broadcasting, licensing and co-founding a business. This account records publication and documented professional roles without predicting future modeling work or private developments.[8]
