Entry into fashion

Long associations with Calvin Klein’s Eternity and Maybelline made her a sustained advertising presence. Her restrained expression suited campaigns built around enduring emotional associations. Repeated association made her face part of the brand’s memory. A fragrance campaign conveyed a continuing emotional atmosphere, with different demands from showing one season’s clothes.[1][2]

Creative partnership

She participated in the 1990 group cover and Freedom! ’90 video. Later choices combined selective modeling with education and social interests rather than a single celebrity trajectory.[3]

Defining work

She completed studies at New York University and developed interests in religion, philosophy and yoga. Education formed a substantive strand alongside fashion.[1][4]

Changing direction

A publicly discussed childbirth complication prompted work on maternal health. No Woman, No Cry (2010) examined access to care in four countries. The film examines experiences in Bangladesh, Guatemala, Tanzania and the United States. Its questions concern how place and access to care shape childbirth, extending the focus beyond its maker.[5][6]

Later career

Every Mother Counts grew from the film’s campaign. Grants, advocacy, running and further films became ways of sustaining the mission; official records identify her as founder and president.[5][6]

Legacy

The organization’s fifteenth anniversary and a 2025 Time recognition document sustained later work. Her career connects selective modeling with institution-building and advocacy. The organization’s timeline connects the film with the campaign and subsequent support work, documenting a sustained institutional project.[4][5][7] The institutional timeline connects film, campaigning and program support.
