Takahiro Miyashita: Starting Again
Music, internal construction and successive new beginnings.

A Jacket from the Farewell
Takahiro Miyashita Number Nine history can begin with the jackets of Autumn/Winter 2009, A Closed Feeling. Complex upholstery fabrics, veiled models and Beth Gibbons’s music formed a memorable presentation. Yet the clothes remain more than stage accessories: weight, layers and edges reward close inspection. This was his last collection before leaving the label in that period. Knowing the ending affects how a later audience sees it, but the garment’s structure deserves separate attention. His rock music references connected memory with making rather than simply reproducing a singer’s wardrobe.
Learning Through Clothing
Born in Tokyo in 1973, he learned through practical work rather than formal fashion schooling. After planning and publicity at Nepenthes, Japanese interview chronologies date the beginning of Number (N)ine to 1996, while some English accounts use 1997. Takahiro Miyashita Number Nine history developed through Tokyo collections from Autumn/Winter 2001 and Paris presentations from Autumn/Winter 2004. Gus Van Sant’s films and alternative music provided important references. The worn appearance of young people’s clothes met precise production. Making a new object look lived-in involves deliberate choices distinct from ordinary wear.
From Band to Solo Work
Following his 2009 departure, he started TheSoloist in 2010, presenting its first collection in a showroom that July. Takahiro Miyashita Number Nine history thus includes a changing relationship between group work and personal responsibility. He compared the former organization to a band and his new project to solo performance. Early deconstructed tailoring exposed handwork and internal structures rather than concealing every trace behind a smooth finish. Tailoring constructs volume around a body through cutting and sewing. Deciding which side should be visible became part of the design. The name expressed creative responsibility, not the absence of everyone involved in production.
When Inside Becomes Outside
For Autumn/Winter 2017, leather piping traced jacket and trouser seams, while a fleece-like material combined cashmere, wool and silk. Takahiro Miyashita Number Nine history continued through such unexpected encounters with materials. The lining construction moved outward in wool ripstop jackets and long tunic coats with tassel fastenings and pockets accessible from both sides. Piping inserts a narrow edge into a seam, making the assembly visible. This lining construction brought an ordinarily private surface into public view. Functional pockets and ornamental fastenings resisted a simple division between usefulness and decoration.
Another Order of Dressing
Autumn/Winter 2022, The Era, reconsidered the order of dressing. Takahiro Miyashita Number Nine history connects here with The Beatles: Get Back and Summer of Soul. A back-to-front treatment of a 1960s three-button suit and balloon-like proportions informed by cycling changed relationships between posture and garment. Such back-to-front construction depends on recognizing the original suit before seeing its alteration. Bright accents within black and white connected with Billy Preston and other musicians. Rather than transcribing a documentary into costumes, he considered how its subjects approached dressing. Alongside rock music, soul, blues and jazz widened the references. Tags hanging outside also moved normally internal information onto the visible surface.
A New Name in 2026
He left TheSoloist after Autumn/Winter 2025, The Black -and- White Realism, announced a new project that September and introduced Number (N)ine by Takahiro Miyashita in March 2026. Takahiro Miyashita Number Nine history therefore requires separating the person’s work from every product bearing either label. The new official site announced Cardinals products connected with Summer Sonic in August 2026. Collecting earlier clothes and making new ones occupy different moments. Judging the current project only through the scarcity of old pieces would miss changes in its products and presentation.
Reading a Small Component
An October 2026 Timberland collaboration added an original zip component to its six-inch boot. Takahiro Miyashita Number Nine history now includes a focused alteration that retains a familiar silhouette while changing its fastening. The all-black design carried branding on the zip part. Stylist Tsuyoshi Noguchi and photographer Takay created the visuals, with blackmeans contributing treatment for the shoot. The official announcement distinguishes those customized photographic samples from retail products. The same precision helps when reading his clothing: identify the musical or cinematic reference, then follow its transformation into a line, material or fastening. Recognition and close observation together reveal continuity across repeated departures and returns.
