A stripe as a starting point

Grace Wales Bonner history can begin with the silver Samba from 2023. Crochet stripes interrupt its leather upper, turning a familiar sporting mark into an encounter between smooth and open textures. How can different clothing cultures meet within an everyday object? Her practice connects tailoring and sportswear without treating comfort and ceremony as opposites.

Learning to compose an image

Grace Wales Bonner history began in southeast London, where she grew up with an English mother and Jamaican father. She enjoyed reading and writing. While studying at Central Saint Martins, she interned at Meadham Kirchhoff, contributed to Pop and assisted stylist Camilla Nickerson in New York. She credited Nickerson with showing how arranging objects can communicate a story. Her 2014 graduate collection, Afrique, accompanied critical research. She founded her label that year and presented Ebonics through Fashion East in 2015. Menswear offered distance from the question of what she personally wanted to wear.

Two early forms of expression

Grace Wales Bonner history took material form in Afrique: high-waisted flared trousers, cropped mohair jackets, gathered bandeau tops and tailored denim, with substantial costume jewellery. Short upper garments emphasised the waist while contrasting textures complicated the outline. A contemporary interview located its references in expressive Nigerian style of the 1970s. Ebonics subsequently put words associated with poet Amiri Baraka onto a sweater, making language visible on the body. The 2016 LVMH Prize increased international recognition. Black masculine identity remained a question explored through clothing, literature and images rather than a single prescribed appearance.

Land of Wood and Water

Grace Wales Bonner history includes the 2023 adidas collection centred on Jamaica. A pale teal nylon tracksuit and knitted track clothing offered different textures within familiar sportswear forms. A Harrington jacket with flared trousers shifted sporting references towards an outfit for going out. Beside the silver Samba, a neutral nubuck version used leather stripes. The comparison retained the same outline but altered shine and texture. Jalan and Jibril Durimel made the campaign photographs and film; Tom Guinness styled it, placing the garments within relationships between people and landscape.

Curating movement

Grace Wales Bonner history extends beyond seasonal collections. A Time for New Dreams at the Serpentine in 2019 brought her practice into exhibition-making. MoMA’s Spirit Movers, running from November 2023 to April 2024, assembled around forty collection works to explore movement, sound and expression. Terry Adkins, Moustapha Dimé and Betye Saar were among the artists included. Working with Michelle Kuo and the museum team involved relationships between autonomous artworks rather than decoration for a runway. The associated book Dream in the Rhythm developed another arrangement of images and texts.

Softening ceremonial dress

Grace Wales Bonner history continued in Morning Raga for autumn 2026, referencing architect Balkrishna Doshi. An indigo linen tailcoat and tuxedo trousers softened through washing retained ceremonial forms with a different touch. Read as clothing, the change separates formal authority from conventional polished surfaces. Anderson & Sheppard is a longstanding tailoring partner. Specialist construction supports an experiment that depends on recognisable proportions: the form must remain legible for the altered material to register.

A new house, an ongoing label

Grace Wales Bonner history entered another phase with the October 2025 announcement of her appointment to Hermès men’s ready-to-wear. The announced debut is January 2027, still future at this article’s October 2026 review. In a summer 2026 interview she described her early weeks at the house while continuing her own label. Her influence can also be read through the cropped graduate jackets, literary sweater, knitted track clothing and softened formal suit. These objects make different cultural memories meet through precise changes of proportion and texture.
