Elie Saab: Ornament and the Body
Ornament and the Body
ÉPOPLI ·

Two surfaces in one image
Halle Berry’s appearance at the 2002 Oscars is a defining public moment in Elie Saab history. A translucent, ornamented upper section meets a dark, flowing skirt. Their different densities organize the silhouette rather than merely displaying decoration.
The translucent ground reveals the body between ornaments, while the skirt expands its line into a broader plane. Fabric trailing behind moves differently from the fitted upper section. This red-carpet gown communicates through contrasting densities and changing viewpoints.
A Beirut atelier
Elie Saab history begins with his birth in Lebanon in 1964. Numéro identifies Damour as his birthplace and describes clothes made for his sisters around age nine. He opened his Beirut atelier in 1982, aged eighteen, attracting clients seeking wedding and evening clothes.
Cutting, fitting and supporting decoration on delicate fabric established the practice. The atelier grew during wartime in Beirut. Individual orders and coordinated making remained central as its public reach expanded.
Between cities and institutions
Elie Saab history connects a Beirut base with European presentation circuits, including Rome and Paris around 2000. Accounts sometimes compress invitations and institutional membership into conflicting dates; these should not become a single claim of being first.
Here, couture describes a system of skilled making and individual fitting, not simply a glittering expensive garment. A Paris presentation does not erase work in Beirut. The relationship between the cities is organizational as well as visual.
Surfaces in 2023
The Spring 2023 collection offers a comparison within Elie Saab history: close-fitting mermaid shapes and broad capes give ornament different fields of movement. The embroidery can follow the body or spread beyond it.
Decorative menswear also appeared. Its presence broadens the comparison without making it secondary to womenswear. Cultural references should be described as references, rather than treated as faithful reproductions of another region’s dress.
An imagined summer night
Spring 2026 couture invoked the summer nights of 1971. Look 41 gives Elie Saab history a precise material example: a voluminous skirt of layered organza and crystalline feather-like textures paired with a beaded tulle shirt resembling macramé.
The skirt and shirt both use open space at different scales. Organza holds volume while allowing light between layers; the upper surface creates a finer repeated network. Compared with the 2002 gown, the contrast now lies between two differently constructed airy surfaces.
An announced project, not a completed launch
As of 11 October 2026, Elie Saab history includes the announced H&M collection, scheduled for 22 October. The official release identifies him as Chairman and Chief Creative Officer. It is premature to describe sales or commercial success.
A September presentation revealed a mermaid-shaped bridal piece with an off-shoulder top, train and veil with embroidery. Womenswear, menswear and accessories involve the partner’s design organization, including Ann-Sofie Johansson. The retail project should not be confused with the conditions of individual couture orders.
Reading an organization through its clothes
Elie Saab history is held together by adjustments between close contours and surfaces moving beyond the body. The famous Oscar appearance, broad capes and a retail partnership address different audiences and conditions.
Start with the outline, then follow where ornament gathers and where fabric leaves the body. That turns a general impression of glamour into identifiable choices. Design responsibility and specialized labour should both remain visible when a founder’s name becomes a diversified house.
