Career & style
Dakota Johnson appeared in The Social Network and the television comedy Ben and Kate before Fifty Shades of Grey gave her a widely recognized leading role. Her later films include The Peanut Butter Falcon, Cha Cha Real Smooth and Am I OK?, showing a career that extends beyond the franchise through which many viewers first encountered her.
Her fashion work preceded that breakthrough: she signed with IMG Models in 2006 and appeared in Mango’s denim advertising in 2009. A later association with Gucci links her image to a different fashion context. Rather than treating an advertisement, a movie costume and a premiere outfit as interchangeable, read each against its purpose. Denim marketing presents an everyday proposition; a luxury campaign creates a brand world; screen clothing serves a character.
