Early life
Karlie Kloss was born in Chicago in 1992 and grew up in St. Louis. Ballet training helped develop bodily rhythm and movement, and she later described it to Vogue as valuable preparation for modeling. Her doctor father and artist mother form part of her background, but physical expression and curiosity are more useful threads for understanding the career. Balancing performance and education became an early concern.[1]

Entering the profession
Karlie Kloss was scouted at a St. Louis charity show and joined professional representation as a teenager. Calvin Klein provided an important runway beginning. In a 2023 retrospective she remembered a major booking overlapping with her first week of high school. Her mother and a teacher sometimes accompanied European trips, revealing the educational and logistical work behind a teenage modeling career.[1][2]

The breakthrough
Karlie Kloss appeared on Teen Vogue’s cover in 2008 and built a major runway and campaign portfolio. Dance informed her handling of clothing as well as her walk. She later recalled lifting a dress when it caught on a heel at an Alexander McQueen show. That incident illustrates the ability to respond in performance and keep presenting the garment rather than an ideal of effortless perfection.[1][2]

Defining work
Karlie Kloss first appeared in the Victoria’s Secret show in 2011, expanding her audience. Fashion work for Dior and Oscar de la Renta coexisted with fragrance and cosmetics campaigns. Models.com records work with Estée Lauder, adidas and Carolina Herrera. Moving between editorial fashion and large commercial campaigns required adapting expression to different products and media.[1][2][4]

Expanding the practice
Karlie Kloss began an education initiative in 2015 after learning programming herself. Scholarships for young women at the Flatiron School developed into Kode With Klossy. Its official history records camps, virtual learning and later AI and machine-learning curricula. Her role is best described as founding and supporting an organization that expands access, rather than implying that she personally teaches every course.[3]

Latest documented work
Karlie Kloss expanded into television hosting, production and media business. Her official site groups work under fashion, impact and media and identifies i-D and Life among those interests. Modeling continued: September 2026 credits include closing Carolina Herrera and a W China cover. New business roles coexist with image-making; recent history here follows published credits rather than projected plans.[4][5]

A place in fashion history
Karlie Kloss repeatedly connected modeling with learning and institution-building. School alongside shows, later college study, nonprofit education and media ventures involved different responsibilities. St. Louis named a street for her in 2024, formally recognizing her connection to the city. Her record invites examination of how visibility accumulated in fashion can support educational and media organizations.[2][3][6]
