Early life
Hyun Ji Shin was born in Seoul in 1996. In a 2019 interview she recalled her mother sending her to a model academy after school. Someone close recognized a possibility before she planned an international career herself. Study interrupted early training, and a television competition later provided a return. Education, interruption and renewed entry complicate a simple instant-discovery narrative.[1][3][6]

Entering the profession
Hyun Ji Shin won Korea’s Next Top Model season four in 2013. Broadcast attention and contract opportunities led to further work, including Sydney before major New York shows. She recalled Coach as an important early overseas booking. Competition success aided entry, while new languages, casting practices and clothing interpretation still required practical adaptation.[1][2][6]
The breakthrough
Hyun Ji Shin drew Vogue’s attention in 2015 through shows for Dries Van Noten, Coach, DKNY, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Rodarte. She described surprise at walking for admired designers. The former television contestant became a working model across cities, adapting to different silhouettes and show atmospheres. This early breadth provided experience for a longer career.[2][6]

Defining work
Hyun Ji Shin expanded into Max Mara, Proenza Schouler and Zara campaigns and CR Fashion Book, British Vogue and W editorials. In 2019 she recalled participating in Karl Lagerfeld’s final Chanel campaign, explaining that material initially intended for press became the official campaign. Photography added another arena for communicating the clothes beyond runway movement.[1]

Expanding the practice
Hyun Ji Shin shared Chanel’s fall/winter 2020 finale with Gigi Hadid and Mona Tougaard. In July 2023 she closed the fall couture show alone. A shared finale and solo closing are distinct credits. Both mark trust in conveying a collection’s final impression and belong to a relationship built over multiple shows and photographic assignments.[3][4]

Latest documented work
Hyun Ji Shin’s 2026 credits include Chanel couture and métiers d’art, COS in Seoul and Louis Vuitton’s Color Blossom lookbook. Vogue Korea lists an August cover and September model feature. Dated assignments connect international runways and Korean editorial work, documenting current practice more specifically than a name appearing on an agency roster.[5]
A place in fashion history
Hyun Ji Shin converted a competition opportunity into repeated seasons of work, then sustained brand relationships, campaigns, covers and closing roles. In 2019 she resisted treating modeling as necessarily short-lived and cited older working models as inspiration. Continuing assignments allow that view to be read as an ongoing professional direction rather than merely an aspiration.[1][2][4][5]
