Early life
Anok Yai was born in Egypt in 1997 and grew up in the United States with South Sudanese heritage. She studied biochemistry with medicine in mind and also practiced visual art. Her earlier daily life was that of a New Hampshire student. Naming the actual university matters because the location of her discovery is frequently mistaken for where she studied.[1][3][4][7]

Entering the profession
Anok Yai visited Howard University’s homecoming in 2017 while enrolled at Plymouth State. Steve Hall’s street photograph circulated online and attracted agencies. She later corrected the mistaken claim that she attended Howard. The viral image opened a professional possibility, but popularity did not supply all modeling skills; castings, shoots and runway work followed.[1][3][5]
The breakthrough
Anok Yai signed with Next and opened Prada in February 2018 within months. Coverage identified it as the first opening by a Black model in roughly two decades, following Naomi Campbell. She understood the moment as larger than individual achievement. Its significance belongs to a specific casting history, not a claim that discrimination across fashion had ended.[2][4]

Defining work
Anok Yai expanded into work for Mugler, Versace and Saint Laurent and became an Estée Lauder model. Unlike the original street image, these assignments were deliberately created by teams. Interviews describe her interest in building characters through clothes. The career’s center of gravity shifted from discovery to repeated professional image-making.[3][4][6]

Expanding the practice
Anok Yai told W in 2023 that she continued visual art, especially oil painting, alongside frequent professional travel. This complicates an image of models as purely passive subjects. Personal artistic practice should still be distinguished from exhibitions or institutional recognition. The documented claim is that she makes art, not an invented public reception for unannounced works.[3]

Latest documented work
Anok Yai was named Model of the Year at the 2025 Fashion Awards and discussed her career and preparation at Teen Vogue Fest in 2026. British Vogue’s 2026 interview addressed using her voice after international recognition. She now explains professional experience rather than merely appearing in discovery stories. These awards and public conversations form the recent documented endpoint here.[5][6]
A place in fashion history
Anok Yai’s career connects social media’s speed with established institutions that select and develop professional models. A widely shared image was followed by representation, a pivotal runway role and repeated seasons of work. Emphasizing chance alone hides that process. Study, art, image-making and an increasingly public professional voice form a fuller account.[1][2][3][5]
