Isabel Marant: Dressed-Up Clothes for Moving Lives
Dressed-Up Clothes for Moving Lives

Height inside an everyday shoe
Isabel Marant history can be read through the Bekett sneaker. A concealed wedge combines an everyday shoe with the effect of a heel. The current version uses a five-centimeter rise, Velcro straps, a padded tongue, rubber sole and contrasting leather and suede.
The question is how ease and a dressed-up silhouette coexist. The sneaker exterior lowers formality while the internal height changes the standing line, compressing the label’s approach to mixing clothing codes into one object.
Matte suede and smoother leather distinguish the panels even in black, while the wedge remains concealed.
Beginning with clothes she altered herself
Isabel Marant history begins with her 1967 birth and upbringing around Paris. She customized clothes at school, studied at Studio Berçot and gained fitting experience with Michel Klein before developing jewelry and knitwear.
Twen began in 1989 with knitted and jersey pieces. The official chronology dates the namesake house to 1994, followed by its first show in 1995. A first boutique opened in a former artist’s workshop on rue de Charonne in 1998.
The relationship between separate pieces
Isabel Marant history expanded with Étoile in 2000, offering a more casual wardrobe alongside the main line. The house’s account emphasizes trying pieces on, connecting its knitwear beginnings to practical movement.
The 2013 H&M lookbook paired an embellished jacket with cropped leather trousers, a loose blouse with printed jeans, and roomy outerwear with white trousers and fringed boots. Different levels of formality and texture kept the outfits from becoming overly polished.
From Bekett to Chuck Taylor
Isabel Marant history in footwear continued through Converse in 2024. The Chuck 70 Wedge placed a concealed rise within a familiar canvas sneaker, retaining its recognizable toe, sides and lacing.
Compared with the Bekett’s layered leather and padded tongue, the Chuck presents a simpler surface. Transferring an idea to another construction changes the resulting silhouette, making the partnership a material design exercise as well as a meeting of recognizable names.
Small metal points around a curved bag
Isabel Marant history includes the Oskan Moon, introduced in 2023. Studs trace its half-moon leather body, while an adjustable strap and internal compartments support daily use. The decoration sharpens an outline rather than relying on a large logo.
The softer body responds to its contents while metal points hold a visual rhythm. Where the sneaker changes the body’s line from inside, the bag emphasizes an object’s outer boundary.
A dispute over the sources of design
Isabel Marant history also includes criticism of cultural borrowing. In 2020 Mexico’s culture ministry questioned Indigenous cultural elements in the Étoile autumn–winter collection. Its December statement recorded dialogue and an apology, emphasizing recognition and relationships with the communities involved.
The dispute concerned the connection between the makers of cultural forms and their commercial use. The house separately launched an endowment fund and a secondhand platform in 2021; those initiatives do not establish that every issue in the earlier dispute was resolved.
A wardrobe carried forward by a team
Isabel Marant history now requires distinguishing its founder from the design organization. Longtime colleague Kim Bekker leads recent collections as creative director; the spring 2026 show marked this succession publicly. The house’s official spring 2027 menswear presentation also credits Bekker.
An embellished jacket with plain trousers, height concealed within a sneaker, and studs defining a curved bag offer different routes to a personal wardrobe. The founder’s approach leaves room for combination, while a new creative lead and team continue to interpret it.
