Christopher Kane: Everyday Objects Become Clothes
Neon dresses, liquid trims, figured lace and a new chapter at Mulberry.

A pencil case becomes a dress detail
For autumn/winter 2011, coloured liquid enclosed in plastic interrupted black dresses. The reference was the soft, liquid-filled pencil case of childhood. Christopher Kane history repeatedly moves familiar, apparently modest things into carefully made clothing. Material experiments changed the relationship between a restrained background and an unstable-looking surface. Crochet associated with domestic furnishings appeared in the same collection. These were questions about taste as well as unusual effects: what happens when school and home enter the visual language of evening dress?
A label built by siblings
Raised in Newarthill in Scotland, Kane moved to London at eighteen and completed undergraduate and postgraduate study at Central Saint Martins. His 2006 graduate work attracted Donatella Versace’s attention, and he established the label with his sister Tammy that year. Christopher Kane history is therefore a sibling partnership rather than a solitary enterprise. Tammy had studied textiles. Their shared memories of clothes, objects and family dressing became an ongoing conversation through which ideas took shape. Her role cannot be reduced to helping with administration; the dialogue also shaped the clothes.
The concentrated force of a small dress
The spring/summer 2007 debut, presented in 2006, established short, close-fitting dresses in intense colours. The British Fashion Council records Ana Mihajlovic wearing a yellow example. Christopher Kane history used neon colour to concentrate attention within a small silhouette rather than relying on monumental volume. Detail and proximity to the body gave those compact garments visual force. Their later reinterpretation for Self-Portrait demonstrates the persistence of this early vocabulary. Yet neon colour alone cannot explain a career that repeatedly changed surfaces and references.
Figures within the lace
An autumn/winter 2015 dress discussed by V&A Dundee incorporates intertwined human figures into lace. Christopher Kane history made a familiar decorative material change meaning when a viewer recognised bodies within its pattern. The wearer’s body and the represented figures became layered rather than separate. Material experiments thus operated through interpretation as well as unusual substances. The museum connects this work with the siblings’ relationship and shared Scottish background. Its appearance differs from the debut dresses and liquid trims, but each tests what happens when familiar elements acquire an unexpected relationship.
A collection is not the same thing as a sustainable business
Kering acquired 51 per cent of the label in 2013 and announced discussions about returning full control to its founder in 2018. Christopher Kane history subsequently included the business closing in 2023 and the siblings securing their brand name again. A 2026 interview revisited the pressures of the pandemic, the flagship closure and wholesale conditions. Recognition for collections did not guarantee stable operations. The sibling partnership still had creative work to pursue, but production, distribution and a place to work were essential to its next form. A company’s closure was not the end of its designer’s practice.
A studio and infrastructure offered by another house
Self-Portrait’s residency gave Kane access to its London Harella House studio, team and distribution network. Thirty looks revisited elements of his spring/summer 2007 debut. Christopher Kane history here became an experiment in working through another company’s resources rather than simply reissuing an old collection. Founder Han Chong described the programme as a space for outside creatives. Carine Roitfeld participated in a campaign photographed by Larissa Hofmann. An existing vocabulary could become a current product through a different production organisation.
Returning with Mulberry in 2026
Mulberry appointed Kane creative director of women’s ready-to-wear in March 2026; the spring/summer 2027 collection followed that September. Christopher Kane history now includes translating the Bayswater bag’s graphic details into clothing and returning to memories of school uniforms and family dress. The sibling partnership remained part of the dialogue. The announcement scheduled sales from January 2027, distinct from the runway presentation. Material experiments connect early plastic effects with later leather: both relocate a familiar object into an unfamiliar position. Following that transformation is more revealing than labelling the results merely eccentric.
