Career & style
Nicole Kidman began working in Australian film in the 1980s and reached a wider international audience with Dead Calm and Days of Thunder. Moulin Rouge! placed her within an extravagant musical world; The Hours, in which she portrayed Virginia Woolf, brought an Academy Award. Her television work includes both acting and producing on Big Little Lies.
Two fashion references connect this career to different forms of image-making. At the 1997 Academy Awards she wore a chartreuse Dior gown designed by John Galliano. In 2004, she appeared in Baz Luhrmann’s Chanel No. 5 film. One is an appearance at a live event; the other is a carefully directed advertisement. Comparing them makes the distinction between red-carpet dressing and the storytelling of a luxury campaign clear.
