Between film costume and public dress
Grace Kelly’s film career included High Noon, Rear Window, To Catch a Thief and The Country Girl, for which she won an Academy Award. In 1956 she married Prince Rainier III and became Princess of Monaco. Her Hollywood work and later public duties belong to distinct chapters of her life.
Those chapters also offer different ways to read clothes. A costume in a Hitchcock film contributes to suspense, character and setting; an outfit worn on an official occasion works within protocol and public visibility. Rather than treating every photograph as evidence of one timeless look, compare purpose, construction and context. Kelly’s association with an Hermès handbag is another route into how a person’s image can become attached to an object.
