Career & style
Emma Stone developed her early career through comedy, including Superbad and Easy A, before taking on a wider range of dramatic roles. La La Land and Poor Things brought Academy Awards for leading actress, but their visual worlds are markedly different. The former builds a musical romance around contemporary Los Angeles; the latter places a changing character within an invented, elaborately designed world.
Her films offer a way to discuss fashion without confusing an actor with a costume. In La La Land, color and movement are part of the musical image; in Poor Things, scale and silhouette participate in a character’s transformation. Festival portraits add another layer: they show the performer outside the fiction. Reading these images together makes the work of costume, performance and public styling easier to separate.
