Billie Eilish first attracted attention with Ocean Eyes in 2015, made with her brother and collaborator Finneas. Her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? followed in 2019. The close relationship between voice, production and visual presentation is important when tracing the development of her public image.

Oversized clothing became one recognizable part of that image, but later fashion work deliberately complicates any fixed description. A 2021 British Vogue shoot used corsetry, while her appearance at that year’s Met Gala featured an Oscar de la Renta gown. These examples invite a comparison of volume and fit. They do not justify guessing her private feelings: an image can change without supplying an explanation of its wearer’s psychology.
